What are NASA FIRMS and VIIRS?

NASA FIRMS means Fire Information for Resource Management System. It distributes satellite observations of active fires and other thermal anomalies. VIIRS means Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite, a satellite instrument used by FIRMS that can detect heat signatures at roughly 375 m pixel resolution.

A FIRMS marker is not automatically a confirmed fire. Fire Radar cross-references the observation against official fire-service incidents and tracks repeated unmatched locations to reduce persistent non-fire clutter.
